Due to the major lack of employability- and self-enterprise empowering skills amongst our youths (especially in the building and construction artisanal and professional trades; more so, because many of our youths perceptionally see building and construction trades [like CONSTRUCTION CARPENTRY, MASONRY, PLUMBING, ELECTRICAL & SOLAR INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE, STEEL WORKS-which includes steel fixing, welding and fabrication-and SITE MANAGEMENT, colloquially called "SITE ENGINEER" in Nigeria] as "dirty work"), and the fact that many of our practising building and construction artisans cannot read basic drawings or work with the requisite respect for precision in measurements, therefore making their works to lack the aesthetic beauty envisaged in the original drawings and utilities like electricity, plumbing masonry works often becoming sources of frustration to the owners or residents of property. We (a group of Nigerian building and construction professionals; returnees and some still in the upscale UK, Dubai, US, South Africa and US diasporas) have started a cutting-edge building and construction training institute in Lagos, UNIVERSAL LEARN DIRECT ACADEMIA-aka TRAIN2BUILD, to skills-empower the youths and bring the practising artisans up-to-date on how to read drawings, work with precision measuring and productivity-increasing power tools.
WE HAVE HOWEVER DISCOVERED THAT VERY MANY OF THE YOUTHS AND ARTISANS WHO DESIRE TO TAKE THE COURSES CANNOT AFFORD THE OVER-DISCOUNTED TUITION; SO 99% OF OUR 140 STUDENTS' PRESENTLY DON'T PAY TUITION FEE! AND MANY ARE STILL EAGER TO ENROL. WE NEED YOU TO KINDLY DONATE YOUR "WIDOW'S MITE" TO ENABLE THIS NATION-BUILDING PROJECT TO BE ONGOING SUSTAINABLY. INDEED LET US EXTEND IT TO ABUJA AND OTHER PARTS OF NIGERIA.
We also intend to use part of the funds to be generated from this crowdfunding outreach to produce an industry excellence-galvanising Reality TV Show, THE CONSTRUCTION APPRENTICE, that students of construction-related courses in universities, polytechnics, technical colleges and private training institutes like ULDA will partake in. And the winners across the trades will be mentored to setup businesses with their winnings from the competition.
