I happened to be at the emergency unit of Teaching hospital Calabar. And met this young mother. She left her child with her little niece to cater to since morning and the workers and patients were complaining, wondering where she ran off to. And why she neglected the child all day.
I got closer and asked the little girl about her aunt. She said, she went to the bank. In the afternoon she was still not back and the little girl drank garri and groundnut with the 2year old on admission. She refused any offer of food and said the baby loved only water and groundnut. This baby is on & off Oxygen and has a nasogastric tube on.
The mother returned in the evening with food for all of them. Not long, she disappeared again. This time, to get drugs for the child.
When she got back, I managed to walk up to her and ask about her welfare. As I feared, this woman went in search of money for food. I don't know where, but she managed to get something. And the truth is I don't know how far this will take her.
Her son was born with a hole in his heart and they are regular patients at the Children's Emergency pending when she is able to afford 45 million for treatment outside of the country.
She needs help! For 5 days now I have not seen anyone come here to visit, bring food or pray for her like all the other patients. My heart breaks each time I see her and the child. It's been one Doctor's prescription to another. I heard the Doctors ask what plans she had for food yesterday morning. I also heard them tell her not to feed the child with solid food.
Any mother would break down but she seems to have this confidence and hope that things will be fine. This morning I heard her pray and she prayed for others too.
45 million naira is a lot of money but that is not even all we are talking about... This woman needs food and money for drugs and other basic necessities to sustain her and the baby. The Doctors are already doing so much to help. But she needs as much help as she can get until she's able to come out of this...
We can help by donating a token for the urgent surgery of the boy.
Early this morning when i saw this broadcast on whatsapp, I was broken. I didn't want to assume this was a scam so I decided to visit the Child in the hospital.
